Life is a purposeful action
Degree: Mental Health Counseling
My time at Oakland University is where I truly began to develop my professional identity. I applied for a Graduate Assistantship to work in The Adult Career Counseling Center and after being selected, I began the process of entering the career service industry. I now have the pleasure of saying that I have helped over 50 individuals and provided over 350+ direct hours with members from the surrounding Metro-Detroit communities. Although a person's career is not their entire life, it is a resource that is utilized to provide for themselves and their families.
During my clinical semester, I also had the opportunity to provide mental health services. This was not only a great educational experience, but also very rewarding due to the fact that I had the chance to help and watch individuals make positive changes in their lives. Learning how to case conceptualize in a mental health capacity has also helped me thrive in the career service industry.
Degree: Sociology/Minor in Counseling
Although I originally attended this school for Engineering, I ended up finding my true passion, Mental Health Counseling. Along the way I met lifelong friends, sought guidance from professors, received my first promotion for a job, and volunteered for a program assisting children with learning disabilities. Looking back on my time in Toledo only brings back positive memories.
The Reconditioning Team consisted of student workers from The University of Toledo and assisted the Residence Life Department during the summer and fall/spring semesters. After just a year and a half on the team, I was promoted to supervisor and lead a team of 8 students for the remainder of my time at the university. My teams role was crucial to the preparation of the dormitories for incoming and returning students.
My Practicum semester of my Masters in Counseling program was my first true test of working with individuals with behavioral and cognitive problems. I was able to successfully translate my education into practice. I worked with various demographics and also had the opportunity of working with a couple. My theoretical orientation aligned with that of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy. The accomplishments and overview of my time as a Practicum Counselor are outlined below:

Although working as a Career Counseling Advisor is very similar to my current position as a Career Management Consultant, it also had its differences. As a Career Counseling Advsior, I had the opportunity to dive much deeper into the personal lives of my clients in order to discover the true nature of the vocational concerns. Lets put the Career in its place
Career Management Consultant
I provide career coaching services for individuals in vocational transitions. Whether their company went through restructuring and their position/department was eliminated, or they took a voluntary severance package, it is my job to get these people back on their feet.
I encourage a balanced perspective where my clients are spending time on their careers, but also their personal lives. Most of my clients agree that their families are their top priority. Their next position should compliment their lives outside of work. A career should provide support, identity, purpose, and fulfillment, but it should also not add additional stress or come before our own well-being.
Services
Although I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in a clinical setting, I could not help but notice that many of the clients I worked with were also experiencing career issues. Either that, or a negative work environment or job loss was inhibiting positive growth personally.
Think about when you meet someone new, what is usually the first question they ask you? Usually, some form of "What do you do for work?" comes up! It is my view that our careers are very much so part of our identity and intertwined with our personal lives. Knowing this, examining the clients I work with from a clinical and career perspective allows me to get the whole picture.
As a counselor, it is critically important to establish and develop your therapeutic approach. I am confident that working in the Career Service/Management fits my style and allows me to perform at my best for the clients I serve.
